- Dump everything out (and maybe clean your drawers... ahem). You may want to do this when little helpers are napping instead of busy grabbing super sharp knives.
- Get rid of everything that doesn't belong in them. Put it where it belongs. It may even belong in the trash.
- Group like objects together. Like, say, sharp stuff; or measuring stuff...
- Sort the stuff in each group into smaller, related groups. My sharp stuff ended up divided into openers, knives (with their sharpeners), crafts blades and peelers.
Now it's time to put everything back. I put all the "dangerous" stuff in one drawer (blades, openers, lighters...) and the "measuring and pouring" instruments in the other. This is also the time to play around with dividers. I got rid of one and replaced it with a smaller bamboo one;to fill the space at the back of the drawer, I used the bottom of a 3-liter oil jug that happened to fit just right and keeps the divider from sliding back (on top of holding the funnels).
